Considering you grew lettuce which does NOT flower or produce fruit… its perfectly logical that it DOESNT need red light which is important for flowering and “fruiting”and not vegetation and most full spectrum leds have 60-70% of red led diodes… Just saying.. You should do some fruit grow actually … If you did send a link

    1. @Ana Reale tomato seed germination is more affected by moisture & warmth than light. Keep your seeds moist not soggy and keep constantly warm. As soon as your seeds germinate you can use the lights to increase growth of seedlings. You can also use lights with heating pad because some light does penetrate soil but it’s really imo not as much of a difference in the germination vs no light when you have a heat source…
      Leds don’t put off much heat.
      Best method I use for soil is germinating in any container that has greenhouse effect in any climate. If the climate gets cool during any time of germination add heating pad or place the container on any consistently warm heating. (Ex. On top of Hot water heater).
      If you have heating pad make sure it’s not one of those auto shut off after 2hr ones. That will become a burden to keep resetting.

    2. White light/uv light is made up of the entire spectrum and has you covered. No need for different leds. Unless you just want to save on power.

  2. Lettuce must be picked fast. Or it will produce a bitter taste. It matures very quick. The sooner it’s picked the better it is. After just a few days it will start to get bitter.

  3. Some people think green light is useless to plants. The truth is, plant leaves absorb more than 70% of green light from sunlight.

  5. I’m Curious if your results had anything to do with the red or blue lights and not just the fact that there are less white lights. might be something to test in the future. your white led panel vs 1/3 the number of just white leds

  6. I wish I had found this video before setting up my grow tent. Good news is I picked mostly white lights, and relatively the same conditions. The red/blue lights I had were left over from last year trying to keep tropical plants alive through winter and were definitely lacking. The plants all lived… but barely. Good hopes for this winter!

  7. I would like to know what kind of “white” LEDs were used. Afaik for domestic use these are generally R/G/B LEDs. But for grow lights it’s better to use Blue LEDs with a phosphor coating to make additional green, yellow and red. The phosphor red includes some near infrared, which is very useful for leaf growth. Don’t focus on PAR too much. I prefer to measure the spectrum and then calculate all the area under the curve manually from UV all the way to NIR (300-850 nm). Also look at the ratios for R/B and R/NIR (and UV for some plants). The red/white/blue light seems to have too much blue in it (hence the dark color, the process to make chlorophyl is triggered by blue light). When you use white LEDs you don’t need to use many blue LEDs. You can even make do with mostly white and some red LEDs. Generally the red LEDs are not less efficient, it takes a lower voltage to make red light. It’s usually the blue LEDs that are less efficient.

  8. “better” light means smaller leaves. If you think of leaves as solar panels, the less light you have the bigger the panel has to be to produce the same energy. Low light = long leggy branches and large leaves. High light = compact smaller growth. High light makes the plant happy, but if you intend to eat the plant, you’ll have a sad tumtum

    1. It’s not quite that simple. Something around more than 20% blue light inhibit cell expansion which in the case of something like lettuce is not good because it grows less. On the other end of the spectrum, infrared light causes stretching as it simulates shade. These parts of the spectrum are synergistic with each other. It’s not just about the intensity of the light. But for this experiment the light intensity was the same.So to sum it up the blurple light produced Compact plants because of the excess blue light and had darker leaves because it’s the plant’s response to shade conditions as per the spectral output. White light (3500k) takes the guess work out of trying to mix light colors. White light is already mixed with colors the way pants evolved to use it.
